Sue Howells – Blowing in the Wind

Blowing in the Wind seems to be the perfect artwork of the week this week. The weather has changed and this picture depicts it wonderfully. Blowing in the Wind is a Signed Limited Edition Print by the artist Sue Howells. The print features passersby struggling with their umbrellas in the wind. The quirky portrayal of the buildings painted in this artwork is in Sue Howells instantly recognisable style. Known for her interpretation of landscapes and buildings Sue has developed a bold and vivid style to express her view of the world and bring perspective to her painting. Sue comments “nothing in my pictures is real. Everything is off-kilter, which generates an energy that seems to appeal. The more I exaggerate my figures, the more popular they are. People can see what they want to see if pictures aren’t literal”. The colours Sue uses take on a range of hues when she adds light and dark, giving a translucent quality together with brush texture and an ability to use contrasting colour to very good effect.

The popularity of Sue’s work saw her win the Fine Art Trade Guild Best Selling Published Artist in 2008.

Sue Howells was born in Birmingham in 1948; her painting career stared at a late stage. In 1982 she took a course in watercolour painting and it was then that the seed was set. It was soon after that she started selling paintings in local galleries, interior design studios and restaurants. In 1992 she was elected member of Birmingham Watercolour Society and the Birmingham Art Circle.

Sue’s full collection of Signed Limited Edition Prints can be viewed and purchased from Union Art.
