Artwork of the Week - 7th July 2014

Simon Harmer - St Paul's Cathedral.

Based in Winchester, Simon Harmer owns and manages a successful creative digital agency. In his spare time he loves to illustrate, he creates hand-drawn images of landmarks, buildings and iconic monuments. Most of his illustrations are based in the UK but he also draws favourite cities around the world, such as New York.

These illustrations are drawn in almost one continuous line, giving a fluid, yet rustic style. His images are normally given a splash of one colour to highlight a specific area and give the picture depth. We can see this in our chosen artwork this week; St Paul's Cathedral.  This is a stunning hand-drawn print of the iconic London landmark - St Paul's Cathedral.

Simon's interest in art began at an early age, he loved comics and this motivated him to experiment with drawing. With encouragement from his family – his mother’s side had always been artistic and his grandfather was a good amateur painter – as well as teachers at senior school, Simon gradually developed his skill. After studying Art at A Level, he embarked on a two year Junior Foundation Course in Shrewsbury before heading for Portsmouth University at the age of 21 to do a degree in Illustration.

Since then Simon Harmer has had 2 books published; A Line Around Winchester and A Line Around Salisbury, both of which have been a huge success. He has also had works published in The Guardian newspaper and in 2011 an illustration from Simon Harmer's New York series was licensed for use in a global online campaign by Hugo Boss, fronting up their global website, Twitter and Facebook profiles, as well as promoting a competition in USA, Canada, UK, France and Germany.

All of Simon Harmer's illustrations are available at Union Art as signed prints, to view the collection click here.
