Patrick Caulfield - Still Life Ingredients

We are delighted to have a new collection of Limited Edition Prints, by the renowned artist Patrick Caulfield, now available at Union Art.

Patrick Caulfield was born in 1936 in West London and studied at Chelsea School of Art from 1956 to 1960. During his studies, Patrick won two prizes and this funded his trip to Greece and Crete upon graduation. This visit proved to be important for him as he found inspiration in the bright, hard colours of Crete. This is evident in his artwork Still Life Ingredients which was a screenprint on paper produced in 1976 and is now available at Union Art as Limited Edition Giclee Print. Each print is produced on 310gsm thick, 100% cotton rag and is hand numbered and hand embossed. The image depicts a view through a window to organic shapes of leaves and branches beyond, culinary ingredients in the foreground. The artwork has vibrant colours and although the subject matter is traditional, the manner in which he portrays this attractive scene is new and bright.

In 1963 Patrick went on to teach at Chelsea School of Art. One of his greatest friends was the abstract painter John Hoyland and his contemporaries included David Hockney and Allen Jones.

Later in his career, Patrick Caulfield worked on several commissions in addition to his painting and printmaking. In 1990 he designed a stained glass window for The Ivy restaurant, it is visible from within the restaurant and on its exterior. In 1992 he designed a 12-metre carpet for the British Council's Manchester headquarters and in 1984 and 1995 set designs for Party Game and Rhapsody (respectively) at the Royal Opera House. Caulfield painted the doors of the Great West Organ at Portsmouth Cathedral in 2001.

Patrick died in 2005. He exhibited in numerous group and solo shows and an exhibition was devoted to his work at the Tate Gallery, London, in 1981 and another at the Hayward Gallery in 1999. His work is held in the both public and private collections Worldwide. Collectors include Charles Saatchi and David Bowie.
