Russ Mills

Russ Mills was born in 1971 in Exeter, Devon. He completed a BA Hons in Graphic Art and Design specialising in Experimental Film and Animation in 1995 at Leeds Metropolitan University. Russ Mills likes cheap Bic biro pens and after employment in various non-creative institutions he went back to experimenting with pen, pencil and computer. He uses the biros and pencil to sketch his beautiful portraits of friends and Japanese street urchins. He likes them so much that he gave them a shout out in his artist pseudonym: "Byroglyphics". Russ Mills also likes cows. In the British countryside where he lives, he once came across the surreal scene of a renegade cow driving a tractor. It seems to have made a lasting impression and now cow and horse heads crop up in his paintings, perched on his subjects’ heads like masks, making them look like mythical creatures. He has spent 20 years crafting his skills, absorbing influences from every facet of visual culture. He has worked as a freelance illustrator with numerous clients in publishing and entertainment, more recently pursuing the more traditional gallery/exhibitive path with solo shows in London and Bristol and group exhibits in the U.S.  Now grab a peice of what Russ Mills himself calls "His kitchen sink surrealisum" .
