William Greengrass

William Greengrass

William Greengrass (1896-1970)

William Greengrass was Assistant Keeper at the Victoria & Albert Museum. He produced rather whimsical wood engravings before becoming a colour linocut artist.

William Greengrass studied at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art (1930) under Claude Flight (see Biographies), and in fact Flight featured his work in both of his publications – 'Linocuts: a Hand-Book' (1927) and 'The Art and Craft of Lino Cutting' (1934).

William Greegrass exhibited in Flight’s Redfern Gallery exhibitions in the 1930’s and his linocuts typically focused on the speed and movement of the human figure.

William Greengrass' works are rarely available, but his linocuts are much sought after by collectors of Grosvenor School prints. His work is held in several public collections, including the British Museum, the Ashmolean, the Huntarian and the V&A.

Public collections holding works by Willian Greengrass include:

Newport Museum and Art Gallery; Auckland Art Gallery; British Museum; Ashmolean;  Huntarian and the V&A.
